Just like our own hair, horsehair is affected by changes in humidity. In our climate hair shrinks in winter and stretches in summer. Because of this, you might find that the hair hangs loosely on the bow and you can't get enough tension to be able to play properly. Sometimes it's possible to shorten the hair but if it has been a while since the last rehair, replacing the hair is the better option.
Or perhaps you've lost a lot of hair, especially on one side. Loosening the screw on the bow each time you are finished playing will prevent the hair from stretching too much, and will also protect the bow from warping.
Also, if you find you're always needing to add rosin to obtain the sound you once had, the interaction between the rosin and the hair has changed and it may be time for a rehair. Too much rosin can have a dampening effect on your sound.
Horsehair becomes brittle with age and loses its bounce. Rehairing your bow at least once a year is generally recommended.
You can usually pick it up in a couple of days. If the bow needs other work, it may take longer and we can examine your bow together when we meet. For your convenience, I can loan you a bow while yours is in the shop.
Absolutely! If within a reasonable time period you are not satisfied with the work, I will gladly redo it at no additional cost to you. Your satisfaction is very important to me.
